หลังจากประสบความสำเร็จท่วมท้นกับละครมิวสิคัล West Side Story ในปีที่ผ่านมา ปีนี้ เตรียมอุดมดนตรี วิทยาลัยดุริยางคศิลป์ มหาวิทยาลัยมหิดล (Young Artist Music Program - YAMP) ขอนำเสนอโอเปราเรื่อง Hansel & Gretel ในวันที่ 5-8 มีนาคมนี้ ที่ตึก YAMP มหิดล ศาลายา ถือเป็นโอเปราเต็มรูปแบบโดยโรงเรียนมัธยมครั้งแรกในเมืองไทย นำแสดง ขับร้อง และบรรเลงดนตรี โดยเหล่านักเรียนซึ่งกวาดรางวัลทั้งเวทีสากลและระดับชาติกันมาแล้วมากมาย
จากเรื่องของสองพี่น้อง แม่มด และขนมหวาน ในนิทานของพี่น้องกริมม์ เองเกิลเบิร์ต ฮัมเปอร์ดิงค์ คีตกวีชาวเยอรมัน นำมาสร้างสรรค์ให้เป็นอุปรากรซึ่งนิวยอร์คไทม์ยกย่องว่า "เป็นงานประพันธ์ดนตรีที่อ่อนหวาน งดงาม และน่าหลงใหลที่สุดเรื่องหนึ่งเท่าที่เคยมีมา ในประวัติศาสตร์ละครโอเปรา"
ภัทรสุดา อนุมานราชธน หรือคุณบัว ซึ่งเคยมีผลงานกำกับโอเปราเลื่องชื่อ อาทิ Les Mamelles de Tiresias, Dido & Aeneas, The Three Penny Opera, มู่หลาน และพันหนึ่งราตรี มารับหน้าที่ผู้กำกับ Hansel & Gretel โปรดักชั่นนี้ โดยเลือกพลิกโฉมให้สะท้อนยุคสมัยปัจจุบันมากขึ้น
"เราตีความใหม่ว่าฮันเซลกับเกรเทลเป็นเด็กชุมชนแออัดที่หลงแสงสีเสียงของป่าคอนกรีต ได้ไปลักขโมยข้าวของ และหลงไปอยู่ในโรงงานนรกซึ่งมีเจ้าของสวยหรูแต่ใจร้าย ใช้แรงงานเด็ก เราจะเนรมิตตึกเรียน YAMP ที่โอ่โถงให้กลายเป็นมหานครที่น่าตื่นตาตื่นใจ จะมีลูกเล่นใหม่ๆ ให้ดูกัน"
นักร้องและนักดนตรีที่ร่วมแสดงใน Hansel & Gretel ครั้งนี้เป็นนักเรียนมัธยมปลายของ Young Artist Music Program ทั้งสิ้น ซึ่งแม้จะอายุยังน้อย แต่ผู้รับบทนำส่วนใหญ่ โดยเฉพาะฮันเซลกับเกรเทล และบทพ่อกับแม่ ต่างก็เคยกวาดรางวัลทั้งในประเทศและระดับสากลกันมาก่อน เช่นเวที The Osaka International Music Competition ณ ประเทศญี่ปุ่น และงานศิลปหัตถกรรมนักเรียนแห่งชาติปีที่ผ่านๆ มา
วิษา นพพร นักร้องสาวเสียงโซปราโน ชั้น ม. 5 เจ้าของรางวัล Platinum Prize ประเภท Vocal - Classical จาก The 1st Bangkok Classial Music Festival กล่าวว่า "หนูตื่นเต้นมากเลยค่ะที่ได้รับบท Gretel ได้ฝึกความรับผิดชอบ และฝึกการทำงานจริงกับผู้กำกับมืออาชีพด้วย พวกเราซ้อมกันเต็มที่ทุกวันค่ะ"

Award-Winning Young Vocalists Present Modernized Opera "Hansel & Gretel"
After the immense success of last year's musical West Side Story, Young Artists Music Program (YAMP), the pre-college division of College of Music, Mahidol University, steps up its game to present Hansel & Gretel in the first full-scale production of an opera by a high school in Thailand. A must-see performance from the school's award-winning young musicians and vocalists!
From Brothers Grimm's fairytale of two young siblings, an evil witch and a gingerbread house, nineteenth-century composer Engelbert Humperdinck turned the story into an opera hailed by the New York Times as "one of the sweetest yet most lushly captivating scores in the entire operatic repertory."
The performance will be under the helm of Pattarasuda Anuman Rajadhon, an esteemed opera director whose previous works include Poulenc’s Les mamelles de Tiresias, Purcell’s Dido & Aeneas, The Three penny Opera, Mulan and A Thousand and One Night.
She aims to take Hansel & Gretel in a new direction.
"The siblings are children from a poor slum family, who get lost literally and metaphorically in the hustle and bustle of a concrete jungle. They get lured into child labour at a factory owned by a charming yet evil business woman. We are transforming the whole YAMP building into one dashing metropolis for this show."
All actors and musicians involved in this production are high school students of Young Artist Music Program. Young as they are, most of the performers--especially those in lead roles as Hansel, Gretel, Father, and Mother--have already won notable awards for young vocalists, both nationally and internationally.
Wisa Nopporn, a soprano in M.5 (grade 11) and Platinum Prize winner of The 1st Bangkok Classical Music Festival, still couldn't believe she landed the role of Gretel.
"I'm so excited! Working with such a prominent opera director is the best opportunity for me to grow musically and professionally. Our daily rehearsal is intense right now and the show will be amazing, I'm sure."
